Adapted from BMJ 16 March 2023
IN the UK Biobank Study, 360,000 participants were investigated for factors that cause young onset dementia.
Researchers looked at sociodemographic, genetic, lifestyle, environmental, psychiatric and blood marker risk factors.
15 factors reached statistical significance, but of these the most important ones were:
Orthostatic hypotension
A history of depression
Alcohol use disorder
All of these more than double the risk of young onset dementia.
Of these, probably only alcohol use, can be considered something under your personal ability to control.
